Laser skin rejuvenation (also known as laser skin resurfacing) is a cosmetic-dermatological procedure used to improve the appearance of the skin, reduce fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, and scars, and refine the skin’s texture. Here’s an overview of the most important information:

🔬What happens during laser skin rejuvenation?

There are two main types of lasers used for skin rejuvenation:
1 – Ablative lasers

These remove the top layer of skin (epidermis) and stimulate new collagen production in the underlying dermis.

  • Examples: CO₂ laser
  • Erbium: YAG laser
👉 More effective, but with a longer downtime (healing phase of 1-2 weeks)
2 – Non-ablative lasers
  • These penetrate deeper layers of the skin without damaging the surface and stimulate collagen production.
  • Examples: Fraxel laser
  • Nd: YAG laser

🧴What can be treated?

  • Fine lines & wrinkles (e.g., around the eyes, mouth)
  • Sun damage and pigmentation
  • Acne scars or surgical scars
  • Large pores
  • Uneven complexion
  • Loss of elasticity

⏱ Treatment duration & sessions

  • Duration: approx. 20–60 minutes depending on the area
  • Number: 1–5 sessions (non-ablative), possibly only 1 for ablative procedures
  • Interval: usually 4–6 weeks between appointments

🩹Healing & aftercare

  • Ablative lasers: redness, crusting, swelling – 1–2 weeks downtime
  • Non-ablative lasers: slight redness, swelling, no “open” skin
  • Important: sunscreen (SPF 50), no aggressive skincare, no sauna/tanning beds for the first few weeks

⚠️ Risks & side effects

  • Redness, swelling
  • Pigment shifts (especially in dark skin)
  • Scarring (rare, usually due to improper aftercare)
  • Infections (e.g., reactivation of herpes on the lips)

  • Non-ablative lasers: approx. €150–€400 per session
  • Ablative lasers: approx. €500–€1,500 per session

📋 Suitable for:

  • Mild to moderate signs of skin aging
  • Acne scars or pigmentation disorders
  • Light skin type (less risk of hyperpigmentation)

❌ Not suitable for:

  • Active skin infections
  • Pregnancy
  • Fresh sunburn or very dark skin (with some lasers)
